If you are thinking of coming along to bellydancing classes for the first time you probably have a whole host of questions. This section deals with many of the questions we are regularly asked. Do bear in mind though that the answers relate to hipsinc classes - other teachers may well run things differently.

What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes you can move easily in. A loose top with tracksuit bottoms or leggings or a flowing skirt with elasticated waist is ideal. You should also bring along a scarf to tie around your hips to help you get into the mood. In addition, we always have a range of lovely coin hip scarves to buy at the lessons at very reasonable prices.Do you have to be young and slim to look good?
Absolutely not! This is one of the great things about belly dance. It is perfect for all figures and some of the best dancers are the largest. And we have all ages in our classes, from 8 to 80!I’ve put on loads of weight -
I won’t be able to move my belly!
I have a bad back, is it safe for me to do belly dancing?
Talk to your doctor if you have any medical problems to check that it is safe for you to exercise. Let your teacher know if there is any medical condition she should be aware of and if you suffer from any joint problems.In fact because belly dancing was originally developed as an exercise to alleviate the pain of childbirth it is famous for helping back pain and period pain.
I can’t make every class, will that matter?
Not at all - in fact you can drop in and out of classes as much as you like or swap between different classes on different days. And you don’t have to worry about being new, new people are starting the beginners classes all the time and the atmosphere is very supportive and welcoming.Can I eat beforehand?
Although you really shouldn’t have a big blow out meal or alcohol before class you likewise shouldn’t come along starving hungry and needing your supper. So have a light meal or a sandwich to make sure your blood sugar is stable but ideally eat it at least an hour before class.
