150 bellydancers light up Croydon’s Ashcroft Theatre

Around 150 student and professional bellydancers lit up Croydon’s Ashcroft Theatre with glitter and sparkle this weekend in what was probably the UKís biggest ever bellydance show. The spectacular event, called Born to Shimmy, showcased the talents of the hipsinc bellydance school, based in Croydon.

The theatre was a near sellout and the audience responded with enormous enthusiasm, clapping and cheering throughout the show.

Hipsinc director, Charlotte Desorgher said: We were absolutely thrilled at the reception from the audience. They almost took the roof off the Fairfield Halls! And the sight of 150 bellydancers on stage for the finale was just amazing, I’ve never seen anything quite like it!

The show featured a wide variety of bellydance styles, from sparkling cabaret, through traditional folkloric dances to the very latest Shakira-style street-bellydance. And the performers included students of all ages, from youngsters to ladies of mature years, plus some of the UK’s top professional bellydancers, several of them international award winners. All are part of the hipsinc school.

The show also featured the launch of the hipsinc troupe, a professional bellydance group aiming for international stardom. All the troupe members are hipsinc students, and several are already professional soloists.

Hipsinc is the largest bellydancing organisation in the UK with more than 800 students around the region. The regular weekly classes take students from absolute beginners through to professionals and there are regular social events and shows.

Hipsinc teaches regular weekly beginners bellydance classes in Croydon. Classes are Monday 7pm at Scream Studios in Southend and Tuesday 6pm at the Fairfield Halls.
