Why bellydance?
Belly dancing, or Raqs Sharqi to give it its true name, is a beautiful and ancient dance form that is fast becoming the latest dance craze in Britain. Originally developed as a dance to prepare women for childbirth, it has been danced throughout the middle east for centuries. Now stars such as Shakira have brought bellydance to the attention of everyone.
Belly dance has tremendous grace and emotional appeal, as well as being sexy and fun. It is a very individual dance that reflects the personality of the dancer - there are some basic movements which everyone learns and then you build on those movements to develop your own distinctive style.
As well as being a wonderful form of self expression, belly dance is marvellous for trimming the waistline and toning up the legs and arms.
Many people lose significant amounts of weight, especially if they combine bellydancing with a diet, and most notice a change in their shape.
Furthermore, the music is marvellous. As well as traditional styles, there is some wonderful Arabic pop music which we dance to. You’ll find that your own dancing at parties will never be the same again!

In the Middle East women primarily dance in women-only groups; for the love of dancing, not to titillate men.
Hipsinc. classes follow this tradition by being for women only. The result is a very friendly, supportive atmosphere where we can feel relaxed and without inhibitions.
